Amsterdam

Notes from a city built on water: canals instead of streets, bicycles instead of a metro, and a light that feels different here.

Entry 01

A city with no streets โ€” only water

The three main ring canals โ€” Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht โ€” were dug in the 17th century and still hold the shape of the city today. Houses here are narrow and tall: taxes were once based on frontage width, so the staircases inside are a challenge all their own.

By evening the water turns into a mirror: lanterns, bicycles crossing bridges, reflections of gabled roofs. The best time is right after sunset, while the sky hasn't gone fully dark yet.

The bicycle as a way of thinking

Here a bicycle isn't a sport or a hobby โ€” it's simply the shortest way from A to B. Separate traffic lights, separate parking for thousands of bikes by the station, a separate logic to every intersection โ€” the city is, quite literally, designed around two wheels.

There's an unspoken rule: you can spot a tourist by the fact that they look out for cars. Locals look out for bicycles.

Entry 03

A light that's been painted here for centuries

People go to the Rijksmuseum not so much to "see paintings" as to watch how the same grey Amsterdam light has changed โ€” from the Golden Age to the present day. The Night Watch was deliberately hung at the end of the enfilade: the whole hall was built around one painting.

Nearby, the Van Gogh Museum stands as a district of its own. The difference between the two is almost physical: one is about stillness, the other about tension.

Entry 04

A stroopwafel as an excuse to stop

A real market isn't where the souvenirs are โ€” it's where local farmers sell fresh bread and cheese in the morning. A stroopwafel should be eaten hot, balanced right over a cup of coffee, so the caramel inside has time to soften.

Second rule of the city: if the queue is made of locals, join it without thinking twice.

In between

A couple of evening games

Rain outside the window? No trouble โ€” in Amsterdam, that's most days anyway.
